Oh, the places you’ll go…

First sunset I've seen in D.C. Not as beautiful as Arizona, but I'll take it.

…may or may not include randomly stumbling across the White House. Tuesday, I went on a walk after work, and decided to ramble in the direction of Lafayette Park. Somehow, I didn’t realize that this would take me into the vicinity of the White House. (Having no sense of direction can yield some pleasant surprises!)

My return walk at sunset took me down Connecticut Avenue, past a bunch of little shops and restaurants that I’d love to try out. The thing that’s tough about being a single woman in a strange town is that I don’t feel comfortable going out at night by myself — I just don’t know the safe walking routes (there’s not an app for that; I want to create one). Guess it’s time to learn how to hail a cab!

  1. On going out at night alone: I have been to some pretty bad places at 4 in the morning. I find that two things keep you safe. First, look like you know what you’re doing. Head up, walk confidently (but don’t stroll). Second, pay attention to your surroundings. Don’t be on the phone or listening to music. You can usually tell when you’re approaching a sketchy area, try to stay in areas that are well-lit. You know, use common sense. :)
