I was too excited about today to blog last night, so here’s a day-late update.
I went to National City Christian Church. It’s not the sort of church I usually attend. I’m used to a jean-clad preacher and a rock ‘n’ roll worship band. National City is much more the traditional, hymn-singing kind of place. President LBJ went to church here, as did President Garfield (though Garfield apparently did not come to this building). One rather fun thing about it is that there is a pew for each state, with the first cushion embroidered with the state’s seal. (Sorry, Arizona. I sat in California’s pew.)
Even if you’re not the religious type, I recommend going to one of the historic churches in the area just to see the beauty of the architecture and hear the bellow of the pipe organ. (This one rattled my teeth almost as much as the bands I’m used to having at church!) This church only dates back to about 1930, but is quite beautiful. Some of the other churches in the area are much older, and I look forward to exploring them.
