Food!

Today was my unofficial day to eat new things. So I started with Ben’s Chili Bowl. I honestly wasn’t that crazy about the chili, but the half smoke I ate it on was something else. Part sausage, part hot dog, it made my mouth happy and my arteries sad.

Ben’s is a DC landmark that reminded me sort of LA’s The Pantry with its *ahem* patina and, er, charming never-been-cleaned atmosphere. The interior is all business, until you get to the bathroom, which appears to have been painted with chalkboard paint. It’s covered with colorful chalk scrawls like these:

I finished the day off with Ethiopian food. I’d never had it before, and didn’t even know what it was. Served on something I can only describe as a spongey sourdough tortilla, there are no utensils but there is plenty of flavor! From seasoned yellow lentils (think very thick, finger-food split pea soup) to cabbage with sweet potatoes, it was definitely something I’ll be returning to.
